Can someone explain how to increase the memory on a desktop (really old one)? I know there is a board or card but don't know how to find it. (If only the little chip said memory on it.) I think there is a number or something that provides info for obtaining a chip to match.

Also, don't I need something so I don't zap the memory?

Of course, I'll back up my system first, even though I'm not replacing the hard drive. Any other helpful information is appreciated.

Are Fry's and Micro Center the main places for finding these, besides online?

Thanks for all help.

Your memory is located in slots on the main board inside your computer. You should see either 2 or 4 slots about 4 inches long on the main board. The memory will stick up about 1 inch from the main board. Follow the below link and take a look at the this motherboard and what you want to find is the DIMM memory slots. This one has 4 slots and that will be where your memory is. More than likely you will have 2 slots and if you do have 4 slots then more than likely only 2 are being used with 2 being empty.

Fry's and Microcenter are both great places to buy memory but depending how old your system is they may not carry it any longer so you will have to find it online. Also older memory can get expensive.

If you could post your current computer brand and model number I can try to help you. Also post your version of Windows and current amount of memory. You can find the amount of memory by going to My Computer and right click it then choose Properties it should tell you your current configuration. Depending on what you need I may have some older memory you can have I tend to collect parts

I have some old memory too - but if their goal is to increase memory, what I have may not be of any use. I tend to collect this stuff too - for the life of me I can't tell you why. I really should just toss it.
