I've only been to a stylist once so I'm a newbie. I want to get my girl's hair done for Christmas. She got the nappy thin curls from my side mixed with the massive amount of hair from hubby. We know we need to thin out her mane but beyond that we don't agree. (I want to straighten it and dye it the same as my wig...she is vehemently against both lol)

As an aside...I have no idea how to do her hair. I can't even braid. My own hair was on its way out rapidly by the time I was her age so all I could do is apply scrunchy. Her hair is 3X the length so a single tie ain't helping. Is there anywhere I could take classes on the basics like a French braid?

I'm no hair expert, but I do know there are books and videos out there on braiding. Try the library for one, or just check the internet. The beauty of just messing around with someone's hair until you get it right is that you get to just brush it out and try again if it's not right yet. No harm done, and nothing but time wasted. I think my daughter learned a bunch of braiding techniques from you-tube.

Do a You Tube search - you can learn anything on You Tube. Sounds like some good Mommy-Daughter time playing with hair! Have fun!

Santa brought us a straightener so we're gonna spend some time playing with hair this evening. I had to promise to give up on coloring her hair before she said I could straighten it hehe

Livingsocial has the "instyler" the hair iron that turns for $69.00, I have heard that the brush part of the tool hair can get stuck in the brush, I hope it is not true cause I purchased one with my unexpected Christmas money

If you are using a flat iron I would suggest getting the spray that goes on the hair for heat protection. If you have never used one, I would also suggest watch a video on you tube - to use it properly

Good Luck and have fun !!!!

So we didn't get to play around yesterday as I was sick and conked out for like 18 hours. Feeling better today so we'll see how it goes.

I have the instyler that I use on my wigs and the hairs do sometimes get stuck so be sure to use small sections and that seems to help. I don't use it for my kid because she has SO much hair there's no way she'd sit still that long hehe

Argh! Couldn't get the spray to keep her hair from burning. BUT Alex was so excited that she told me when I got the stuff she would sit still for at least two hours...provided we put on Lord of the Rings or I let her play my latest Kindle Fire for the whole time. Now I'm really pumped. Didn't think it would be this difficult just to play with some soft fluffy hair.

Just thought I should point out how much I love my girl. She doesn't really like anyone messing with her hair but she'll put up with me because I have none of my own. Such an empathetic and giving young lady!
