Hello again everyone, my little girl Luca is going to the radiologist today to have her liver looked at. Since she was about 1 years old she started having seizures, not too serious ones. She has always been coherent during the seizures, and able to walk to you and sit in your lap, etc. We changed her diet to a low protein low purine diet shortly after finding out these were possibly caused by liver shunts.
This seemed to control her episodes quite well(to about 1 every couple months that we know of as she typically throws up before seizing and we have found no throw up)
Unfortunately yesterday I received a call from my girlfriend that Luca had 3 seizures in a row, about 2 minutes apart, lasting about 3-5 minutes each(typically her episodes lasted 30 seconds to a minute)
She is at the radiologist now having her liver examined...we are hoping for no liver shunts and that she just has epilepsy, or operable liver shunts, though an expensive surgery we can at least fix it.
Just wanted to get as many people as possible to wish her luck ^_^ She's a fighter!

Just got word from my girlfriend that Luca does not have Liver shunts. This is definitely good as we are pretty much clear of surgery. She could still have a liver disease which is usually controlled by a different diet. We have to get a few more tests done tomorrow and I will update everyone then.

That is good news! Earlier last year my dog had some liver issues and the vet put him on a special diet. There was also a couple of medications we gave him for about 30 days which cleared it up. Good luck!

We had her on the low protein low purine diet, but after this episode yesterday we bought her the Hill's L/D prescription dog food.
If you don't mind me asking what kind of food did you get?

It was Royal Canin L/D (that's what our vet sells). There was also a powder that we sprinkled on his food twice a day. I can't remember the name of it but I'll check when I get home later. It took about 30 days for his system to get back to normal.
Our situation was a little from yours because my dog never had seizures. We really believe that his liver problems was due to the food he was eating at the time.
Did you have a blood test done on her to check her levels? It can be pricey but helps to narrow down the issue.

We had her blood levels checked when she was going to get spayed, and that's how we found out she had high levels, and had to cancel the surgery for that since it was unsafe to put her under with the high levels. We went back a little while later and the levels had gone down to normal/above normal(but we just had our boy Iggy neutered instead, so we still did not get her spayed).
Our vet had said the high levels could be caused by liver shunts, and she hadn't had any seizures at that point. About 6 months after that she had her first seizure, so we took her to the vet and he gave us a lot of info on liver shunts, so we changed her diet again, and it seemed to control it until yesterday. I'm glad we took her in to have the radiologist take a look, and I advise anyone that may have a dog with these problems to do so. Even though it's expensive($500) it really eases your mind knowing liver shunts isn't the issue.
She is having more blood work done tomorrow, and if they're elevated we will be having a liver biopsy performed soon to check and see if she has any type of liver disease.

Prayers for your fur baby! If and when it is ever less risky, PLEASE have her spayed. I almost lost my fur baby two years ago because she was my only one and I didn't think I really needed to get her spayed. They warned me when she was still a pup that she could get Pyometra if I didn't. I didn't take it seriously and when she was about 9 yrs old she got real sick all of a sudden. Stopped eating and high fever. I took her to a completely different Vet and sure enough she had pyometra and needed emergency surgery no waiting. It was risky because she has a really loud heart murmer (common in Chihuahua's)but, she came through it just fine and except for an old age limp she still thinks she's a puppy. She almost died on me though and it was my fault. I read up on PYOMETRA and every article on every website pretty much said the same thing. It kills dogs and cats. Ask your Vet about it and good luck.

Thanks for the heads up! I will look into that as well once we get her liver situation figured out.
As of now she is still at the vet having some tests done (she's been there since 8am) =( will be happy once we get her home today and hopefully hear some good news.
