First, how early should I show up? They said eight but I want to be sure I'm not late because of something I ought to know about. It's in Sherman so I figure I should leave around seven but will leave earlier if needed
Next, how uncomfortable are the seats? Can I bring a cushion? I'm looking forward to serving duty but I'm afraid that my rump will distract me if the seats are uncomfortable. If I can I would rather take my wheelchair but I'm no longer "legally" disabled so don't know how it would work out.
Finally, can I bring a pad of paper and pen or will they supply that? I don't want to forget any facts.
Thanks!

I'd get there 15 minutes early and take a book or magazine to read. Whenever I've served there has been a lot of sitting around and waiting.

Sounds like you got selected for US District Court petit or grand jury duty. IIRC it goes about the same as municipal court jury duty, the building is old, but you'll know pretty quickly if you are moving on to further selection.
On the bright side, it does pay $40 per day plus mileage. I was on a jury one time there for 3 days which totaled around $200.

I was on Jury Duty there for 2 months back in 1998. Federal case. Also paid $40/day and 1/2 hotel expense if I didn't want to drive back every day. Travel time was less than 45 min going north in the morning and south in evenings but a lot has changed in 14 yrs. As I recall, parking wasnt an issue either (back then) I was on the Lowes Highport jury.

Oh I hope this one doesn't last that long! I've already paid for our cabin in Colorado for spring break!
Thanks for the info folks!

Allow more time always for travel and parking than you think is needed. Many people take things to read. Back in the day some took supplies to do needlepoint activities. In today's world I think they would confiscate them.

I did jury duty about 24 months ago at the new place and yes, my crochet hook activated the metal detector. I explained that I didn't think about it, you can now take a crochet hook on the airplane so I assumed it was okay at the courthouse. The deputy examined by project in my needlework bag, I offered to take it back to my car, but he let me in with it.

Cool. Recently we were not allowed to take in a telescopic back-scratcher thingy. They said take it to the vehicle. Vehicle was in the south 40 and I said nope not going all that way. I hid the silly thing near the door, guards watching, and retrieved it going out. They should have been more concerned about me hiding stuff, haha. Good luck.

So now reading material is not allowed. Fortunately I managed to find other outgoing people to spend the free time chatting with. Day felt like it dragged forever but we found out who was selected right after a late lunch. Based on how long they said the trial would last I am relieved to NOT be chosen. I would love to do my civic duty and serve...but not when I've spent a grand on vacation already.

Wait...what? Are you talking about in the "tank" where everyone goes first, or if you actually get selected to be a part of voir dire? I can't imagine this applying to the former; they encourage you to bring reading material.

From the Collin County website: When serving jury duty, will there be a lot of waiting involved?
It is possible that jurors may have to wait in the Central Jury room or outside a courtroom for an indefinite period of time. This is not “wasted time” because the immediate availability of a jury panel frequently motivates the parties of a trial to negotiate and settle a case without a trial. Wi-Fi and television are available, and we encourage you to bring a book or other reading material.

They confiscated books from folks before they went through the metal detector spot. I'm assuming the difference is that everyone was there for voir dire. Was only 45 of us there. They whittled everyone down through survey weeks earlier. Also this was federal court up in Sherman, might just be done differently up there.

I grew up with some of the Loes. We launched our boat at their ramp every weekend. In the 60s and 70s.
