McKinney's own Hutchins is named one of the top 50 BBQ joints in Texas...let the debate begin!

I like Hutchen's but the only time I go there is when my brother is here from Colarado. His favorite place. I need to go more. Just don't go North of Allen much.

Worth the drive to Pecan Lodge in Dallas. Hutchin's is OK, Pecan Lodge is very good.
They got #1 right. Aaron smokes it up perfect. Worth the drive and the long line.

I've been to 15 of the top 50, and I agree with the top 4 for the most part; Louie Mueller in Taylor uses a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of black pepper in their rub, and some folks love it. It's just not my thing. The meat is very tender, smokey and moist, but the pepper is just too much for me.
As has already been said, Pecan Lodge is the real thing, but you've got to be willing to wait for it.
Related humor: Soon after Franklin was named number one, someone on Twitter said "The line at Franklin now extends to Waco and is visible from space". :) I laughed!

Noticed Smitty's in Lockhart is not on the list.
Haven't been there in a couple of years but I think it's better than Kreuz's (and definitely should be on the Top 50)

chasw, some folks on Twitter said that very thing; Daniel Vaughn (TM's BBQ editor) said (and I'm paraphrasing) "It's about the here and now, not a hall of fame". He indicated that numerous recent visits had shown the product to be inferior to that of years past, and this mirrors my experience as well. I've eaten there at least once a year for the last 4 years, and the last 2 were very mediocre at best.

Thanks Brad for the update. My last trip to Lockhart was in 2011 & it's sad to hear that Smitty's has gone downhill.
Oh well, there's a whole buncha places I need to check out in Austin the next time venturing down that way.

As my friends in the Texas BBQ Posse have declared, Austin is the new BBQ Capital of Texas; you don't need to leave Austin to get some of the best BBQ in the state. In addition to Franklin Barbecue (a must-visit if you're a hard core BBQ fan), these joints should be on the short list:
La Barbecue
John Mueller Meat Co.
Micklethwaite Craft Meats
