Hello. We just adopted a 1 yr old black lab from the DFW lab rescue. She's a very sweet and energetic dog. I take her for daily walks (about 4 miles) but this isn't going to cut it. She needs to run. I know about the Canine Commons at the Shops at Allen (we are planning to go tonight) but am wondering if there are any fenced areas around here that we could take her and just let her run. I'm hoping some dog lovers out there could respond. We have a 25 acre property out near Bonham that we are planning to take her to on Sundays but am looking for some place to go during the week. If we don't find a way to relieve some of this energy, my dachshund is going to run away :)
Thanks in advance!

When we adopted our greyhound 2 years ago we were told to stay away from dog parks as this breed usually just wants to run (and run fast) which disturbs other dog owners who are there to let their dogs wander and socialize (as well as the owners). So we have stayed away from that and just let her run in our back yard. She gets in some good laps but we really wish there was a place where breeds like this could run. We are still looking for a place like that and if we find it, I will post here about it for others.
Congratulations on your adoption!

Thanks! I was just walking her again and thinking we need a bigger backyard!
Re: greyhounds, I don't know alot about them but I did know a woman who had rescued one and she told me that she had to watch her dog around other dogs (small ones in particular) because she viewed them as "prey". I thought that was really interesting but I guess since they are trained to chase little mechanical rabbits, I can see that happening!
If I find something, I'll post here as well. Thanks again :)

Most greyhounds are not child or cat tolerant I think mainly because of their size. When they train at the track they chase a small object (can't think of what it's called off hand!)so I guess their mindset is that small things like cats need to be chased. Depends on the individual dog though. Ours is even afraid of rabbits!
There is a big dog park on the north side off White Rock lake. Haven't been there myself but have driven by it many times. It has alot of large dogs roaming around so maybe check that out. It's off Mockingbird. Hope that helps!

Jack Carter dog park in Plano is much bigger than Allen and wide open without trees leaving plenty of room for running

We took our dogs over to Canine Commons last Sat night. I was impressed with the nice size of the park. Our lab had a lot of room to run and there were lots of tennis balls (which she loved). It was a little disappointing though to see alot of dog waste that owners failed to pick up. Other than that, it was good and we'll be going back.
AA, thanks for the tip on Jack Carter. We'll have to check that one out this weekend.

If you were impressed by the size of Allen, then Plano will blow you away. It is at least 4-6 times the size. Downfall is that like I said there are no trees. Which means in the summer, no relief from the sun. And it is also not as cosmetically appealing. But for just wide open space to run or fetch a tennis ball, Jack Carter is the place to be. It's near the NW corner of Spring Creek & Custer for anyone wondering.
We also like Frisco dog park at B.F. Phillips park (Lebanon & Legacy). McKinney just opened one on Virginia just west of 75. Haven't been there yet but I have heard good things

Jack Carter sounds great. I can't wait to take her there and "attempt" to wear her out. She has boundless energy so it sounds like a good place to "attmpt" to wear her out (not sure if that's possible though)! Thanks again.

I have also noticed people not picking up after their dogs at the Canine Commons. It seems some of the people are too busy socializing to notice what their dogs are doing. On one visit, I noticed a dog squatting and all the dog owners were busy talking to each other and didn't notice. I got their attention by asking whose dog it was that just took a dump and the owner quickly got up to clean it up. Sometimes you have to speak up.

Hopefully speaking up is all you'll need to do. Things could get dangerous!

Police in Central Texas say a woman threw dog feces at a man, lobbed a rock at him and then spat on him when he failed to pick up after his pet.
Rebecca Trammell, 46, of Austin was in custody Friday at the Travis County jail on charges that include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
An arrest affidavit contends Trammell was at her apartment's dog park this week when she became upset that the man hadn't removed the dog waste.
Trammell told police she also confronted a second man for not having his dog on a leash. That man sustained a cut to his hand when Trammell allegedly grabbed the leash he was holding and pulled it toward her.
Online jail records did not indicate an attorney for Trammell.

This is the first time I've heard of someone going off the deep end over something like this. Just asking the owners to pick up is usually all it takes.

Was the deadly weapon the dog turd or the rock?

LOL.. In some cases, a dog turd could most definitely be a deadly weapon!
I prefer non-confrontation when out enjoying the dog park. However, in our old neighborhood there were several people who did not pick up after their dogs and my husband caught one lady in the act and confronted her. I think she was more embarrased than anything. Fortunately no deadly weapons were used. The funniest though is the other thread where someone actually posted the pic of the lady walking her dogs... that was classic!
