No I am not talking about annual crape murder, although the lawn company that we've been using for years suddenly decided to murder my crape myrtles this year. I'm not happy about it at all.

My question is on trimming the suckers from the root. Each spring we trim away the new growth so only the main trunks remain, but the new shoots come back so quickly by May the tree looks like a shrub already. Other crape myrtles I see in the neighborhood or in public areas have very few new growths. Is it just me or other people frequently come out to trim their crapemyrtles in the dark when I am not watching?

The crape murder article posted here a few years ago said I only need to trim back the new suckers once each spring, but do you all trim more frequently than once a year? Thanks!

I have two crapes that haven't had a sucker on them in the 10 years that I have owned the house, and one that I have to trim at least once a month!

It might depend on the variety of crape myrtle, how much fertilizer, etc. they get as to how quickly those sprouts grow. You might have to check your crape myrtles weekly or every other week to keep those sprouts under control, but as the we get further into summer, their growth should slow down and you shouldn't need to trim them back as frequently.
