Sorry, if this has been a topic before - I tried to search could not find anything.

Does anyone know how long Hwy 5 from Allen to McKinney will be re-routed/closed?

This is from the Town of Fairview so it should be open sometime in November.

"The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) has an upcoming construction project on State Hwy 5 (Greenville Ave) to straighten out the sharp curves at the RR tracks just south of FM1378. This project will construct two 12’ wide lanes with 10’ wide shoulders and smooth out the curves. Drainage will be improved, and sight distance will be increased. The project has begun and the road was closed on May 21. The project will require a complete road closure for up to six months, although it may be completed sooner if the weather holds out."

Didn't know they were doing this yet. Sure will help. Lots of sad stories there and many close calls, thanks.

the TxDOT page on the Hwy 5 project

and the dirt will eventually start flying on Hwy 75 Spring Creek to 121. Yippy!

along with this one in Richardson. I think this plan includes swapping the on/off ramps.

Its about time they started working on this stretch of road - it could be super scary.

when there was heavy rain, it always floods under the railroad bridge.

I use to go to the church there "Fairview Baptist Church" before we moved and it would get scary with the high water.

Yes us too back in the day, been a very long time and a lot of changes since then.
Glad to have the road fixed and safer for all involved.

I once passed safely under the rail crossing part only to find horses running around on the road just beyond it. I stop long enough to find some people to round them up, but was thinking if anything could make that stretch more dangerous, it's certainly coming across a large animal standing in the road around the blind curve.

The latest update from Fairview's website...

"TxDOT has confirmed that their State Highway 5 project will not finish in February as originally anticipated. State Highway 5 is now projected to open in early April. The contractor working for TXDOT is being held accountable for every day past the original project completion date that work continues. Any further questions that you have can be directed to the local TxDOT engineer assigned to the project, Byron Bishop, PE and the office number is 972-542-2345."

I know plenty of people who are looking forward to having that road open again. It is a pain for them to have to drive around it.

I remember when there were still tiger lilies and some wildflowers growing on the NW bank as you drove north into McKinney that were originally planted by Ms. Bessie Heard many years ago. Those all eventually faded away over time.

We who live in Fairview in the vicinity of Country Club will be very happy when Hwy 5 is open again.

Why did they make this area of the road only two lanes wide?

Someday this section of Hwy 5 will be widened to four lanes and they will end up spending more taxpayer dollars and disrupting traffic again.

Just rode to Van Alstyne and back on 5.

I can't believe it took a year to complete that tiny stretch of road. Amazing.

I was expecting the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Yep, I took my motorcycle up through there the other day and thought the same thing. It's great and they did a beautiful job - and I don't pretend to know all that goes into a project like that - but man that took a long time for what I saw.
