Ours are 15 years old, so it's past time for replacement. We're frustrated, though, by the perilous adventure of replacing batteries in the ones in our high-ceiling'd rooms. Kidde makes a lithium-battery model ($20-ish dollars)that is supposed to go 10 years without replacing the whole unit.
Looking on Consumer Reports, even the ones with CR's highest ratings got very poor reviews from consumers. Any advice on what brands to investigate?
