According to tomorrow's P&Z agenda, it looks like this place is trying to get approved for the SW corner of McDermott & 75 where they tore down that Chevron. Never heard of it. It will be the first in Texas as it looks like it is currently only in Florida, Georgia and Tennesee

The brand is owned by the same company that owns Taco Cabana. Hopefully Pollo Tropical's commercials won't be as annoying...

I remember seeing those in Florida over the summer. Didn't eat at one but was curious about it.

Wow, I shouldn't be negative before they even break ground, but the Florida locations seem to get consistently average to below average ratings. Still, they might have a better franchisee here, so I'll give them a fair shot when they show up.

I can't believe I am reading this! I love Pollo Tropical (and hope that it hasn't truly gone downhill, as it has been many years since I have gone there frequently).
Fried plantains, garlic yuca, black beans, rice, yum!!!! It is not Mexican at all, much more tropical, I guess, for me it seems more Cuban, or Latin American fast food.
I stop there whenever I am in Florida and see one. There was a place in Frisco that had great fried plantains (Marco Pollo) that closed down years ago... but I haven't found great ones other than Gloria's, which sometimes are cooked my way, and sometimes not, and unnecessarily expensive.
I am really psyched!

You're right, Joel. I see they moved their headquarters to Addison. Weird
Why don't they take the old Burger King location? Seems easier than trying to build on that small corner. Or are they saving that for a Carl's Jr. (fingers crossed). Which BTW, the Richardson location shut down :( not sure if they are remodeling

The old BK location is horrible. I lived in Allen for 2 years before I ever even knew it was there.

I hope that's an exaggeration. I don't know how you would miss a free standing building, 20 yards from the highway, on one of the busiest roads in Allen, which houses such a mainstream company as BK. Whether you liked the business or not
Ideal location? no. But not noticing the building in 2 years? I have to call BS

Not an exaggeration at all. It's so far set back and surrounded by other buildings and trees. Not a prime location for any restaurant, IMO.

I moved to Texas from South Florida back in the mid-late 1990's and Pollo Tropical is basically Cuban fast food.
As the earlier poster said, black beans and white rice, fried plantains and lots of pulled pork and pulled chicken dishes.
It's not bad, but it's not great.
The same could be said for the quality of burgers as fast food burger joints like Wendy's and McDonalds.

Speaking of Cuban cuisine ... anyone know anything about The Latin Pig in Plano?

If you like Cuban street food this is wonderful. Tiny place with really good, filling food.
Pollo Tropical is "fast food" and decent in its own right. The Latin Pig is well prepared, common cuban food. It is what you would hope to find when you got home after a day of work in a Cuban community. Too bad they don't have caribbean or, in fact, any beer.

I failed to ask about BYOB. After the painful discovery that there was no Prestige or Carib to sip with my Ropa Vieja and plantains I was condemned to settling for some actually quite nice iced tea.
Incidentally, great Cuban loaves. My friend had a Cuban sandwich that was arguably the best ever.

Heard they don't plan on breaking ground until July for an October 2014 completion. That's a long time to have an empty lot on that busy corner. What's the hold up Pollo?

Gonna be a lot of torn up tires/cars from now until July, all of those folks trying to cut the intersection through the dirt. :)

I just ate at the Addison location for the first time today and I really liked it! Pulled pork was delicious, lots of healthy options, and not too pricey. Hope the Allen location comes through!

There is a for sale sign on that land right now so I don't know if they backed out or if they just never took it down

A Whataburger on that corner would be a gold mine.

The Whataburger on Stacey Road is already too close for my temptation levels. I would have to burn this one down to ensure I stay under 180lbs.
