I was cutting back the winter thatch in my lawn and I noticed whole sections of turf were just coming out of the ground. This area was dominated by a weed like grass that I left alone since it was well green. But now the weed is gone and has left large patches of exposed soil.

I am assuming some simple sod will cure the problem, but what was that stuff and will it come back.

My philosophy of lawn has changed the last few years due to shade and water issues. I used to want the perfect lawn. Now, if something green is growing, I count my blessings for the green and just mow it along with whatever grass might remain.

You might have had some sort of sedge in that spot? Not sure without a photo. Put about an 1 inch of compost down over your lawn and allow your existing grass to fill in those bare spots.

Crabgrass is looking good at this point. It does not need water, cant seem to kill it and seems to be green when nothing else is.
