Very interesting points brought up in this piece. The links to "fear of terror makes people stupid" also has startling data.

Yes, America is a scary place. You also more likely to be killed by a toddler than a terrorist:

Even your own furniture is as deadly as terrorists in this country:
Americans Are as Likely to Be Killed by Their Own Furniture as by Terrorism

Really does cause a reasonable person to pause and consider the cost of this war on terror, especially when our own foreign policy brings a good amount of it to life.

In the US, civilians are killed by police 1000% more often than police killed by civilians. Considering just raw numbers, that's a mind blowing statistic. This is going on police deaths in the line of duty as well as overall crime rates have dropped to record lows.
33 police officer deaths due to shooting in 2013 while officers killed over 300 criminals and non-criminals combined.

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but what would you want this ratio to be? Would we really want this to be a 1:1 ratio? Hypothetically, wouldn’t we want a situation were the only deaths from anyone would be from officers legitimately acting in self-defense? This could mean that our officers exhibit perfect technique and behavior, and are effectively armed with equipment and procedures.
I don’t know that this ratio tells us anything useful. A high ratio would be a reflection of a good police force or an out-of-control force.
