I lost several shrubs this winter, including some right next to the pool and some oleanders. I would like to get some suggestions for good shrubs to plant next to a pool, obviously some that won't be shedding leaves/blooms/etc.
Also, does anyone know what the cone-shaped shrubs are that are planted on the Exchange median between Greenville and 75, next to the stadium? They are 3-4 feet tall, appear to be evergreen, and may be drought resistant since they are planted next to something that looks like yucca.

Visit http://www.txsmartscape.com to find a selection of shrubs for our area. Not knowing how much space you have, it is hard to make specific suggestions because some shrubs can grow to only 4 feet across while others might grow to 10 feet across. If you don't have a lot of space between your pool decking and the fence, I would recommend shrubs such as dwarf glossy abelia, dwarf nandinas (Gulf Stream, Moon Bay, Harbor Dwarf, etc.) and other shrubs that are soft - no pointy leaf tips to harm people who will be in swim suits. The hollies that are planted in the median on Exchange are not at mature size right now and will most likely be one of those that would grow to be too big for the space - meaning constant trimming. Keep the yard work to a minimum and look for a shrub to fit the space.

Thank you! Gulf stream nandina was one I was considering. The space directly behind the pool is roughly 5 feet wide by 15 feet long, so I am looking for shrubs that would grow to a diameter of 3-4 feet. I'll go through that website in more detail.

Yes, the Gulf Stream and the Moon Bay nandinas are nice choices for an area that size. I have some of these in front of my house and they have done well in full sun. They also look pretty in the winter since their leaves will turn hues of red, copper or purple.
It is also nice to mix in a couple other dwarf shrubs so you have contrast in the leaves, color, shape, etc. You might want to group 3-5 of one shrub in one area and some of another adjacent, then repeat one or the other or mix in a third type of shrub. Even perennials like autumn sage are somewhat of a sub-shrub since they get woody and would fill in an area up to 2-3 feet and would look nice mixed in with nandina, abelia, etc.
