This crap has been going on at ALLEN ISD for a long time. My middle child needs constant reminders because it has trickled into the home. If you enable a kid they end up with a 'help-me' attitude and aren't self-sufficient. He is slower to accomplish his chores at home and seems the least motivated at times. At school he completes homework and turns in assignments late a lot because it's allowed. The policy in place is to not punish them for turning in assignments late and to allow them to retake test. I ASKED his Biology teacher to fail him last year (never turning in assignments and didn't have the right attitude) and he magically passed.
He has retaken a lot of tests, too. This WFAA piece should scare you if you're a Denton parent but if you're an Allen parent take note, this has been going on for a long time in our district.

I tell my high school kid all the time, he is in for a rude awakening when he goes to college.
I can see some benefit in allowing kids to redo failed work to a 70 in some cases, but the downside is that it does not prepare them for what happens when they fail a test in college where there are usually fewer tests and assignments which determine your grade. It took a few semesters for my oldest to figure that out.

I think I can understand the 're-testing' features based on the pros/cons but when does it 'end', meaning at what point does the kid not get any more chances? It seems it has gotten worse.

At some high schools, South Oak Cliff and Desoto to mention a couple but by no means the only ones, if you're a stud football player or basketball player you can graduate and not even have to attend classes.
High Schools know if they hand you a diploma and get you out the door, their responsibilities with that student are over. Perhaps explains why 40% of college students will leave higher education w/o getting a degree, with 75% percent of these students leaving within their first two years of college.
