La Convivencia (Coexistence of the Three Faiths) are a milieu in Spanish history when Jews, Muslims and Christians had a tacit truce with each other. Because of this, the arts, literature and architecture flourished.
Although the ideal of dining together at the breakfast table and brotherly love were not observed, relative coexistence was recorded. For over 400 years, knowledge and mysticism thrived in the Spanish towns of Toledo, Cordoba and Granada as students and teachers in all three disciplines helped one another learn, translate, and understand ancient teachings.

Artists such as Diego Velázquez, composers such as Tomás Luis de Victoria, authors like Cervantes, and architechture like the Granada Cathedral were products of that era.

A Sephardic Jew born and raised in the multicultural Izmir, Turkey, Rachel Amado Bortnick will discuss Spain’s Golden Age and La Convivencia at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Allen Public Library. Sponsored by Bach to Books, this program is free. Call 214-509-4911 for more information.
