We are selling our house and may need short term housing for a family of 6 until we find a new one. Checked a couple apartments and they only have 3 month leases that cost more than our mortgage because of the extra fees. Any suggestions?

Lease yours back after you close. You're in a seller's market so you call the shots.

That is what we did when a home we were in sold faster than we anticipated. It was only 2 weeks or so but we essentially rented it from the buyer at their mortgage cost.
The problem is that the buyer has to be willing to do it. If they need to move in quickly I don't see them letting you. If it is just an upgrade and they are local... no reason they wouldn't.
Just ask your realtor about it.

Don't know if you can find anything, and that it would be better and cheaper than apartments, but look for an extended-stay place. Maybe checking with house rentals on zillow would provide some info, including monthly prices.
