His attractive building? I think that is one of the ugliest buildings in Allen. In my opinion his building is an eye sore. Additionally, what dentist office needs a piano in the lobby?

FTR...I also don't care for the scarlet letter A either.

Will work for shoes!

The article and the post was supposed to be about the barriers, not the office itself. But since you mention it, it is not a functional piano, he displays them there for a piano company in Dallas and is for sale. The first one already sold so right now there isn't one.

To each their own. I love the looks of the building myself.

As for that "A" though, I'm on board with you there.

He had to know the expansion was looming at that sound barriers were part of the project.

A 12 foot tall concrete barrier down the east side of 75 all the way up through Allen ????????????????????????? ?

Hot, ugly, and claustrophic.

"Accommodations were made by TxDOT to use Lexan, a clear material, instead of concrete to construct a transparent barrier at the Exchange Parkway location."

In my opinion, the concrete barriers are ugly enough, and I would think see-though plastic ones are just as bad. Something else to clean.

The following statement in the article does not make sense to me...

"it was determined that concrete noise barriers were required to be constructed along the east side of U.S. Highway 75 between McDermott Drive and Spring Creek Parkway"

Should it not be McDermott and Exchange?

If you do a google image search for lexan sound barrier, you can see some applications. I don't know...

If I remember correctly, he has owned that land for well over a decade always planning on building there. Not to mention the years he spent trying to get everything approved by the city. But even if knowing about the expansion, nobody would have expected gaudy sound barriers would be put up to accommodate the dozen or so houses off the highway there.

I was thinking the same thing. There are no "houses" between McDermott and Spring Creek.
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!

Sound walls are the common thing nowadays on these projects. I can understand a biz owner wanting visibility. But expecting no changes is like the citizens moving to a town (any town) and expecting...no changes.

So, he expressed his concerns last year, and a "compromise" was reached with TXDOT -- which he says he is "happy" with. The newspaper still prints a big front-page article about how upset he was over it all. Hey, free advertising!

Not one quote from any of the nearby homeowners. Great job, Allen American.

How are they going to keep the clear part clean? It's going to get dirty fast. Or stained and faded from the sun. It's going to get gross.

Keeping it clean was my first thought too! Not to mention the scratching and dents from trash bouncing off the highway or a big wind storm.

Did look at the link above... looks like prison fencing.

The cleaning and scratching/denting is the big thing. There's no WAY that they'll be maintained, and they'll look like complete crap within a year. Frankly, I'd rather have the concrete ones, but I'm not going to be behind one of them, so I don't know if I'm the person to ask.

It will look like complete crap? That will match the dentist's office. That monstrosity is polarizing. I hate it.

While we are the topic of 75 noise, why is this highway so darned loud?! Seriously, this is probably the loudest road surface I’ve ever encountered. It’s loud both in the car and out of the car. Ever try to sit outside at Chipotle? Was road noise a consideration when choosing the road surface? I’ve noticed that the black-top surface on parts of the Tollways are MUCH quieter than the lighter surfaces. Is our loud surface cheaper or safer?

Is this a issue that anyone else has wondered about? I’d like more sound barriers for this awful road. How about extending them northward, and also on the west side? Some of the sound barriers have nice designs on them.

I’ve also noticed that the road noise that I hear at my house is HIGHLY depending on weather conditions. It seems that foggy whether absorbs noise. I wouldn’t have guessed it, but there does seem to be a correlation.

Road surface. Concrete is loud, but it's a lot cheaper to maintain.

I've noticed that grooved pavement with the grooves going along the lane rather than across the lane is quieter. Of course TXDot uses the ones across the lanes.

Regarding the noise, as mentioned, the concrete is definitely the culprit. I hate them. My entire 76 mile round trip commute is on concrete (SRT-121-114), and the noise inside my car at my usual ~80 MPH is quite loud. Contrast that with, say, the Bush around Carrollton (which is good old asphalt), and the difference is huge.

There are some treatments that can be done to quiet the concrete roads themselves, but I don't know how much of that (if any) is being done around here.

Agree that trees are great, but they take too long to mature.

Ride your bike. They won't need to widen 75 any longer.

There are days when you really want to, at least Hwy 5 is open now, so that is an alternative route.
