I need some advice. Our daughter recently switched cell phone companies and was given a new number. Apparently the woman who had this number before her had alot of debt going on. Now our daughter is getting phone calls from "unknown" numbers with nasty debt collectors calling. She tells them they have the wrong person but they are being very persistent. One guy has now started leaving messages containing graphic sexual content. There is no way to trace these numbers that I know of. I have told her to just change her number but she doesn't want to go through that hassle. Yes, she is our stubborn one. Any advice other than change the number?

It the caller id says unknown or blocked number, you can block these on your phone. My daughter was being harassed years ago. In her case, this stopped all the calls.
You can also call the police department and talk to them.

Have her keep the voice mails, and pursue civil litigation.

Go back to where she got the phone and get a new number.
Also, report any verbal abuse to... https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-co ... Info towards the bottom.

See if you can get the old number back.
Wish more people knew this information before switching:
Under the Federal Communications Commission’s “local number portability” (LNP) rules, so long as you remain in the same geographic area, you can switch telephone service providers, including interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, and keep your existing phone number. If you are moving from one geographic area to another, however, you may not be able to take your number with you. Therefore, subscribers remaining in the same geographic area can switch from a wireless, wireline, or VoIP provider to any other wireless, wireline or VoIP provider and still keep their existing phone numbers.

The carrier should change the number without a charge. We needed to do that for a similar reason years ago and the carrier was very accommodating.
Yes, LNP is a wonderful thing. Our wireline number originally provisioned by SWB (now AT&T) has been been switched from SWB to Vonage (VoIP) and now rests with Straight Talk (Wireless).
