Be on the alert, Summerfield Drive off Malone.
My car was broken into sometime early this morning. Luckily nothing of any value was stolen other than a pair of sunglasses and a cheap media player. What is of concern is my house alarm going off around 5 o'clock this morning. Still in the process of checking the home surveillance video from last night and this morning. You tend to get complacent and not think of these things until it happens, such a shame.

There were a few of those break-ins in my neighborhood some time back. My neighbor introduced me to a guy who welds large sliding driveway gates for about $1200. I haven't had a single problem since. Even went to bed with the garage door open a few times. No big deal with the 6ft gate. I haven't personally checked yet, but I'm told the gate will lower your car and home owners insurance too.

I live in East Allen as well and have noticed an increase in police calls the last few months. Several times I have seen 2-4 squad cars responding to neighborhood incidents. I assume its a burglary of some sort.
I have lived here for over 15 years and am disappointed that our neighborhood is starting to have these problems.

Discount on car/home insurance for having a driveway gate? I did not know that. Hmmm... I'll be calling may agent to see if I can hop on that one. I've had a powered sliding gate for 20 years and love it. Is the $1200 for a powered gate or a manual one?

The price is for the gate only. I bought the motor on ebay for $250

How much damage was done to your car? Makes me made when thee items stolen have so little value but you are stuck with repairs.

My neighbor had a car window broken and had equipment stolen. My daughter had a stereo stolen from her car. Allen PB will come take a report and file it, but little effort expended to actually investigate property crimes. There's no money to be made on property crimes. They're all too busy milking the unlimited overtime to go after the profitable, low hanging fruit on 75.

I would suggest that time is invested but these crimes are usually solved through a traffic stop or some other type of enforcement that brings the little criminals to the attention of the police and then solves a bunch of prior crimes.

I was a victim of a smash and grab in Houston a few weeks ago. It was a rental car, parked for 10 minutes at 6 pm in the parking lot of an ATT store on the southwest freeway frontage road in a nice part of town.
The valuables were on the trunk but I had a small bag with my notebook in it on the front floorboard. No security cameras on the lot.
The vehicle was an absolute mess - driver's side filled with broken glass. And I had to drive it back across town in the rain with no window on the driver's side to the Avis lot for a replacement. I was just grateful it was not my own car.
Turns out that sort of crime is epidemic in Houston. And I really don't know what the police can do to solve it. I should have locked the book bag in the trunk with the things of real value.
It is a royal pain and I am now absolutely fanatic about nothing in the car.

So sorry this has happened to you. So glad it wasn't your personal car. We don't keep anything in our cars. Anything of value either comes into the house on a nightly basis or is stored in the trunk. We have one car in the garage and two that sit in the driveway. We have security lights that come on at night and we bring the garage door openers in nightly as well. We all can do as much as we can for our safety but there are those still out there to cause damage and harm.

Do not leave your purses or valuables in your vehicles when you "just run into the store or gym or daycare for a couple minutes." I saw an article in the DMN Neighbors Go section a couple weeks ago that those "smash and grab" thieves are at it again (as VRS noted above). There were a bunch of them arrested last winter, but there are more and there have been some incidents in our area. They sit in parking lots of daycare facilities, gyms and retail stores and watch for women going in without their purses. Then they break the car window, grab the purse and leave.

Or even if you're just gassing up your car. I saw a story a few weeks ago talking about this. They showed a video of someone creeping up to a car while the woman was at the pump, grabbed her purse and ran off without her even noticing.

Thanks for that information. It is apparently good to keep all the other doors locked even while filling up with gas.

Yes, this happened to a friend of mine last year in Dallas. She was at the pump on the driver's side, someone opened the passenger door and took her wallet. I notice with newer cars, the automatic door locks unlock all doors automatically when we push the gear back to park. So please remember to lock your car when you get gas.
And with regards to locking your stuff away in the trunk, you should do so before you reach your destination. For example, put your purse in the trunk when you leave home, not when you arrive at the gym or daycare. Thieves will just see you putting your things away at the parking lot. After you leave, they'll just smash the window, pull the switch to open your trunk and take your things.

I'm trying to get better about how much is in my truck. No place for another human to sit except the driver. I keep getting robbed (tailgate, wheel/tires)...but if they get inside, they'll be found under the junk that falls out!

What gate person did you use? Can I have their number? I am trying to find someone to do mine.....
