This was news to me...read the article and I think you'll be equally surprised. No telling if it will actually go up or not, but it's interesting at the very least.

KRLD news just mentioned this new stadium at the southeast corner of Hwy 75 & Stacy Road. It would be a good economic boost to have a sports attaction in the area.

I'm generally philosophically opposed to cities using tax money to build stadiums and/or arenas for the benefit of team owners. This case doesn't actually sound like too bad a deal for the city. It appears that the city will benefit directly economically by keeping the revenue from events held at the arena minus a management fee. They are also reportedly protected from losses. It sounds like a deal that I could support. I never buy the argument that the city should put up a bunch of money for something, the team owner or developer keeps all the revenue, and the city is supposed to reap some intangible benefit from "future development" or an increase in sales tax income.

Don't we already have enough of them in Frisco?

Frisco traffic is really nice too! Why not get DART in the city first so someone could get to an arena without driving there. More corporate welfare handed out by yet another star-eyed city. I bet the developer doesn't care if everyone sits in traffic on 75 or Stacy Rd every time one of those money making sporting events happens. Maybe John Stossel's books should be required reading for the city planners.
(I love as good soapbox topic!)

With a minor hockey team in the building, that means Allen HS should have ice in their own city to practice and play games on. Let's hope the City of Allen worked that into the deal.

The article in the DMN said that the arena would be used by the schools, have concerts and the hockey team. Not sure if it is a completely bad idea. EDC of Allen would be investing our 1 cent sales tax toward this. The article made it sound like a done deal?? So I say make the best of it.

G34,
While I'm hopeful that Eagle Hockey would get ice priority, a good start for support would be the AHS athletic department.

Thanks for the constructive input. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but why is this so dumb?
Frisco has done pretty well with its stadiums...I honestly don't see a problem with it. It sure beats the car dealerships that McKinney has lining the US-75 corridor. Personally (and i think most would agree), I'm happy that Allen has been smart with its zoning and planning to keep the developments in that area (75 corridor) more upscale and attractive so we don't end up looking like some parts of Richardson in 20+ years.
Now if we could just get that large anchor space filled in at McDermott and the old Belz Outlet Mall razed....

This is actually a smart idea, this is an arena that will generate revenue. They can host concerts, rodeo's and a CHL hockey team along with having a skating rink for the public to use. I just hope they're not forgetting to open up Stacy quite a bit because all of these things in one location will cause a real traffic snarl.

Maybe the AEDC could weigh in on the rumors here? I'm the rare one that doesn't have interest in these complexes as others do, but I try to see a big picture. And there isn't a place in Allen for one, as it has an impact on an area larger than itself.
That location certainly would not be good. If they really do one, then I'll avoid it and the new DART station that would likely pop up there (after other decisions change of course, haha).

I agree with smu03, I don't think it's that bad of an idea, especially if the city is protected against losses as was mentioned in the article.
There will be no new DART station for anyone to have to avoid. As has been posted in previous forums, the City of Allen would first have to make a huge lump sum payment to buy into DART and then it would have to give up half of their sales tax revenue to DART going forward. The city is already giving up half of their sales tax revenue to build the arena.

From a purely personal point of view, my kids will be ecstatic if they include a public ice rink in the development.
