A friend of ours house was struck by lightning in the storm yesterday evening and caught fire. Because of this it got my wife and I thinking about a lightning rod system for our house to help protect it.

Does anyone have an opinion about this? Had this done and can give some recommendations?

Thanks for all your comments,
Dave

I inquired with my engineer boyfriend as to why more newer homes were being stuck by lightening these days. It's not like the storm has a hungry taste for new houses or something.

He suggested that it was because no one has the old-style huge tv antennas on their houses anymore. In the past, those acted as lightening rods & channeled the huge current into the ground.

It makes sense to me, and makes me wonder as to why new home builders don't have some type of lightening channeler... seeing as how so many houses are being struck and burning. Seems like something that should be required to get home insurance or the like.

I'm just wondering if there's any evidence that homes are being struck by lightning more now than they did in the past? If you think about it, there's a lot more lightning targets than there used to be. ;-)

Our pool was struck in the storm on June 29th. It ended up frying the board in my computer's subwoofer (plugged into a surge protector) and caused couple other electrical issues. Of course it all ended up being just under my homeowners deductible, but we are just thankful no fire occurred.

Fornold, I talked with a friend of mine at work, and they had a lightening rod installed on their house. You might suggest that to your friend.

FYI - don't bother trying to file a claim with a surge protector company unless you have 1000's of dollars in lost equipment. The hassle these guys put you thru to file a claim makes it not even worth my time.
