In response to Allen Eagles Hockey
Our Eagles won their first game against the rivals to the North... McKinney.
It was an evenly matched game and the only thing that could tilt the contest was the penaltes. McKinney struck first when they scored on a 5-on-3 power play, in the first period.
Both teams held tight until the third period. With less than five minutes to play, Garret Master and Ryan Holloway connected with Master scoring the game-tying goal. With intensity still running high, Holloway was able to thread himself and the puck throught the McKinney defense and post the winning goal with only nine seconds left on the clock. Allen went on to win 2 to 1.
Nick Dowhaniuk played a solid game in net stopping 17 of 18 shots. Pat Capetillo had a great game and was able to use his speed to help our Eagles kill off a few minor penalties. Jordon Solomon was solid on defense and can teach the younger guys some things about strong back-checking. First-year Varsity player Colin Leahy has been moved from his normal defensive position to being a right-winger where his size helped him gain position in front of McKinney's net, and was able to tip two shots towards McKinney's net minder.
Allen's Varsity has team a new look to it. There is less of a 'bad boy' attitude which will help to cut down on penalties, but they make up for that with more speed overall, and a significant improvement in the ability to make both long and short passes to keep the opposition guessing where the puck is going to be.
We're looking for good things from this much younger team!

If two-in-a-row counts as a "streak", then Our Eagles are on a win streak, beating Plano East last night, 4-3.
The 4-3 score is not indicative of the way Allen out-shot, out-hustled, out-defended, and overall out-played the boys from East. Allen was actually winning 4-1 in the 3rd period, then a couple of mental breakdowns allowed East to score not just one, but two short-handed goals.
Scoring came from Patrick Capetillo (2 goals, including the game-winner), Jordon Solomon (an unassisted snap shot from the right point that found it's way through traffic), and Preston Pavia (a power play goal, assisted by Garret Master and Jordon Bonzo). Mike Kowalski assisted on Capetillo's game-winner.
Net minder Nick Dowhaniuk only had to face eleven shots from East, a testament to the hustle of Allen's defense. Our Eagles managed to take 26 shots, which is a pretty sizable amount for a 36-minute game.
I've also got to mention the great forchecking this week from Tyler Streiff. He is another converted defenseman and made his presence know in the offensive zone.
I'm not going to make a predicition on next week's game, but Plano-Senior has only scored one regulation-time goal in their first two games... 'nough said.
See ya at the rink!

ALLEN 3 - Plano-West 6
Tough night for Our Eagles. But, I must say that the first period of this game was one of the best that I have seen in a long time. Allen scored first (Garrett Master, unassisted) only two and a half minutes into the game, but West would come back only 35 seconds later to tie the game. A lot of end-to-end action followed until West scored again, at the 9:23 mark of the 1st period. A minute and a half later, Allen would strike (Nick Vanderlaan, from Tyler Streif) to keep the game knotted.
The second period saw West playing with a vengeance. As if their coach reminded them that Allen was the reigning City and State Champion, and both of those titles came at the hands of West last April. There were no penalty issues here, but net-minder Nick Dowhaniuk (37 saves on 42 shots tonight) could not keep West from netting two more goals, and Allen's offense fell short in this middle frame. West took the 4-2 lead into the third period.
A defensive breakdown allowed West to score a short handed goal and started to pull away in the third. Allen D-man Jordon Solomon fired a laser from the point to keep the game close midway through the third period. With time running out, Allen pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but West was able to put enough pressure on Allen to force a turnover and turned that into an empty net goal to get to the eventual final score of 6-3.
Twelve of Allen's Varsity players were not on the Varsity team that won both the City and State Championships last season. Those guys are quickly realizing that they will not have any "easy" games this season, and that they will have to step their efforts to defend the titles that last year's team won. This is a huge undertaking for the first-year Varsity players, but I think that they can rise to challenge and make another run at the State Championship.

Allen Eagles - 4
Southlake - 0
In just over one minute our Eagles scored three goals in the first period. Colin Leahy got the first goal on a fancy dipsey-doodle-between-the -legs-backhander from right in front of the Southlake net (assists to Brian Clinton and Preston Pavia). 21-second later, Nick Vanderlaan pounded the puck past the right side of goalie after the net minder gave up a juicy rebound on a shot from the point (assists to Brian Clinton and Mike Kowalski). And only 47-seconds after that, Ryan Holloway scored (assists to Jordon Bonzo and Pavia) to put this game out of reach for Southlake's fire-less Dragons.
Allen played keep-away for the rest of the game and Holloway even managed to sneak another goal in at the beginning of the third period (assists to Vanderlaan and Garrett Master).
Trey Holloway was solid in net stopping all twelve shots to record his first shutout of the young season.
Quick turnaround this week for the game on Sunday...

Game #6 on your score cards:
Allen Eagles - 3
Coppell Cowguys - 2
This one was not pretty, but it sure was ugly!
Allen had the upper hand for the entire contest but Coppell's tenacity kept our Eagles on edge all night long.
Allen scored the first two goals of this game in the first period. The first by Garrett Master (from Patrick Capetillo and Jordon Solomon) and the second by Nick Vanderlaan (from Capetillo and Mike Kowolski). Our Eagles were in control and should have run away with this game.
Take no credit away from the previously unbeaten Coppell Cowguys, who just kept chipping away. They scored early in the second period to keep the game close. But, Coppell took a high sticking penalty and Solomon scored a power-play goal with a laser from the left point that found the top corner of the net through traffic (assist to Jordon Bonzo on a nice D-to-D pass along the blue line).
Moments later, Preston Pavia was on a partial break-away and was hauled down by Coppell's defenseman, sliding into the Coppell net and goalie. A little scrum ensued and Allen's self-appointed tough guy Jordon Solomon get kicked out of the game. After the scrum, Allen ended up having to kill a four minute penalty. Coppell scored once during that time to pull within one goal.
Nick Dowhaniuk had to save the game by stoning Coppell's offensive onslaught for the last two minutes of the game. Dowhaniuk stopped 17 of 19 shots tonight.
Bonzo had his best defensive game of the year, and Capetillo made numerous plays throughout the game to keep the puck in Coppell's end of the ice. The outcome of this game would not have been the same if these guys didn't play as hard as they did tonight.
Come watch them play next week. The venue for Game #7, has been changed from Farmers Branch to Frisco. Game time is 800pm.
See ya at the rink!

Allen moves into sole possession of 1st place in the Varsity-Gold division!
Allen - 4
Jesuit - 3
Allen, Highland Park, Mansfield, McKinney, and our arch-rival Plano-West all had the opportunity to be at least tied for first place going in to this week's contests in Varsity-Gold hockey action. But Allen was the only team to win their game, and took over as the leader of the pack.
The first half of this game actually moved along pretty good as Allen outplayed Jesuit, but could only manage to find the net one time as Colin Leahy took the puck on the point and fed Patrick Capetillo in the offensive corner. On the power play, Capetillo was able to dangle Jesuit's defender and bury the shot.
Jesuit scored early in the second period to knot the game at 1-1. This was the only even-strength goal of the entire game for either team.
The second half of the game was marred by weak and sometimes invisible penalty calls. The referee at first made a few calls in favor of our Eagles, and we took advantage of the situation by scoring two more power play goals. Our second goal was scored by Garrett Master (from Capetillo, and Ryan Holloway), and our third goal was scored unassisted by Jordon Bonzo.
The third period was played in referee-hell. One penalty call every minute. In a game where there was very little contact happening anyway, this type of officiating really sucks the fun out of the game for both the players and the spectators. Cat calls towards the ref could be heard from the far reaches of the stadium, up in the "peanut gallery".
After a little while, it was apparent that the ref thought he was being a little biased in his penalty selections, and made most of the third period calls against Allen, including a 5-minute major against Bonzo for checking from behind. By the book, the call was not incorrect, but it certainly was poor game management on the officials part. At one point there were eight players in the penalty box... and six of them were Eagles.
Never-the-less, Garrett Master connected with Ryan Holloway (seems like we say that a lot, doesn't it?) who scored a short handed goal to make the score 4-1, in favor of Allen.
As the penalty-fest wore on, Jesuit took advantage of the situation themselves and scored two more power play goals to pull within one, with less than four minutes to play.
During the last four minutes Allen was able to kill off the penalties with solid defensive play from Leahy, Holloway, and Master.
With Jesuit's goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, Holloway stole the puck and got a shot off only to hit the post. Good forechecking in the offensive zone and at neutral ice kept Jesuit from mustering any real scoring opportunities in the final seconds.
Nick Dowhaniuk was in net and made 25 saves on 28 shots, and gave up only one even-strength goal.
Next week, Allen faces off against Coppell again. (Yes, we just played them last Sunday.) This one should be entertaining, as the last meeting is still fresh in both teams' minds. In Farmers Branch at 930pm.

Allen won another close game last night in Farmers Branch.
Allen - 3
Coppell - 2
After a scoreless first period, our Eagles played some "in your face" hockey in the second period to jump to a 2-0 lead in a rematch with the Coppell Cowguys.
Jordon Solomon scored first (assists to Billy Buskirk and Patrick Capetillo) on a power play by rifling a shot past the Coppell net minder from the high slot. Then, Ryan Holloway pounded a shot in only two and a half minutes later (assited by Kevin Kastellic and Garrett Master).
The Cowguys got one back on a power play of their own with time running out in the 2nd period, after Buskirk was called for a phantom holding penalty.
Not to worry. Ryan Holloway scored his second goal of the night (and sixth of the season) early in the third period (assited by Capetillo and Master). Our Eagles were playing stalwart defense, and Coppell could not find a way to score until they dumped the puck into Nick Dowhaniuk's goal crease and the rebound was kicked in by our own Kevin Kastellic. (oops!)
That's all that Coppell could muster, though. Nice work by our players to keep this game under control.
Next week's game is on TUESDAY, due to Thanksgiving schedule.

Allen is back on top of the leader board after coasting to a win last night in Farmers Branch.
ALLEN 7
MARCUS 1
Our Eagles put on a free hockey clinic for Marcus last night. Well... almost free. Both of Marcus' goalies paid dearly to watch this game up close and personal.
The schooling began in the first period when Allen absolutely put on a fore-checking and stick handling show at Marcus' end of the rink. After the first 12-minute period, Allen had three goals on nine shots, and Marcus had not registered even one shot on goal.
Big night offensively for Ryan Holloway (3 goals, 4 points), Patrick Capetillo (1 goal, 4 points), and Garrett Master (1 goal, 3 points). Jordon Solomon and Preston Pavia also added to the scoring with a goal each. Kevin Kastelic had two assists, and Tyler Streif and Nick Vanderlaan also had an assist each. Yes, even goalie Trey Holloway got credited with an assist on Capetillo's power play goal.
The scorekeeper was generous (which is okay) by crediting Marcus with 18 shot over the 2nd and third period. Marcus scored on one of the first shots that Holloway had to face after sitting cold for the entire first period.
The top of the Varsity Gold leader board:
- ALLEN(14 pts) 7-1-0
- Flower Mound (13pts) 6-2-1
- Plano-West (13 pts) 6-3-1
- Highland Park (11 pts) 5-2-1
- Mansfield (11 pts) 5-1-1
Happy Turkey Day to All!

Allen's lead in Varsity-Gold Hockey increases to 3 points.
ALLEN - 2
JESUIT - 1
Garrett Master continued his 9-game point streak by scoring both of Allen's goals in last night's victory for our Eagles. Ryan Holloway assisted on both goals and Patrick Capetillo assisted on the first goal.
Holloway and Master each have 14 points on the season, and are tied for third place in the league's scoring. Capetillo is right behind them with 12 points. This triplet is the league's highest-scoring line.
It's every coaches dream to have a line that produces goals game after game. But it would be all for not if it weren't for some outstanding defensive play to back it up. Nick Dowhaniuk proved himself once again to be one of the best high school goalies in the state last night by stopping 15 of 16 shots. And, defenseman Jordon Solomon and forward Colin Leahy were instrumental in killing off a Jesuit power play in the final minutes of the game.
Allen (8-1-0, 16-points) now has a 3-point lead over four other teams! Highland Park, Mansfield, Flower Mound, and Plano West all have 13 points.
Next week's game versus Highland Park will be a goal tending showdown. HP's Connor Cantrell leads the league with six wins. But that doesn't matter. Both Dowhaniuk and Trey Holloway are up to the task of shutting down HP's offense.

[sorry the update is late...]
Allen loses in shoot-out. Still tied for 1st place.
Allen 1
Highland Park 2
Allen controlled the puck for most of this game and was able to out-shoot HP 37, to 13. Unfortunately for our Eagles, HP's Connor Cantrell played one of his best games this season in goal.
It took nearly two period for either team to score, when HP got on the board with less than one minute to play in the second period. Our Eagles countered with a power play goal late in the third period, scored by Garrett Master, and assisted by Ryan Holloway and Patrick Capetillo.
In the shoot out, Cantrell was able to stop all three Allen shooters, but Nick Dowhaniuck was foiled by a low shot that just snuck by from HP's shooter.
Next game is in Euless (boo!) vs Keller. Although Keller's record is only 5-5-1, they have four very talented goal scorers, and could sneak up on just about any team in the league.
See ya at the rink!

[Whoa!!! Where have I been?! Holidays... you know..]
The GOOD, The BAD, and The UGLY... (but, not in that order)
The BAD news: Our Eagles have not won a game since November. Is it a coincidence that every time that I am late with the updates, our Eagles lose?! Say it isn't so... I couldn't handle that kind of pressure!
The UGLY stuff: Since losing to HP (see above post), our Eagles have lost to Keller (4-1) in a game where our guys just didn't show up to play. Then lost to Flower Mound (2-1, in OT). Then lost last night to Plano-East (1-0), even though our Eagles out-shot P-E 28 to 8. East's only goal came in the first period. Allen had the puck in P-E's crease many, many times. Sometimes the puck was even beside or behind East's goalie. We just couldn't get it to go over that little red line.
That's four, count 'em, four losses in a row. And we've scored only four goals in all of those games combined!
The GOOD news:
(1) I will post updates quicker! Just in case this board is having some sort of effect on the team's karma... Hey, you never know!
(2) Our Eagles were the beneficiary of a scheduling snafu when McKinney was not able to return from a hockey tour of Europe, and forfeited the scheduled January 3rd game to our Eagles.
(3) It looks like AHS Junior Ryan Daugherty will be joining the club to finish out the season. Daugherty has been skating with the Dallas Stars Midget AAA team, after starting the season with the Texas Tornado of the NAHL. Not to put any pressure on, but Daugherty is sure to add some offensive punch to the Eagles line up.
==========
Next game is in Plano at 630pm. Our boys could really, really use some community support
as they take on Plano-Senior, who have won three games in a row.
That's all for now.
See ya at the rink!

Take your foot of the brake, the skid is over!
ALLEN 6 - Plano-Sr. 4
Our Eagles looked pretty good last night in front of a big crowd in Plano. With the addition of Ryan Daugherty to the line-up, Allen was just too strong for Plano.
It was not an easy win, but Allen's game was efficient. Daugherty's constant speed seamed to pick up the tempo for all of the players on the ice, and that worked to Allen's advantage since PL-Sr was missing about half of their regular squad (gone for MLK-day tournaments with their travel teams), and had to call up players from their Silver Division team.
Daugherty had a hat-trick to get his high school season started, including the game winning goal and a short-handed, empty netter at the end of the game.
Billy Buskirk had a strong game, too, getting two goals and an assist. Chris Boswell found the back of the net, and Preston Pavia contributed with two assists and some strong fore-checking.
Although Allen took a few undisciplined penalties, it was still a fun game to watch. Fast and physical.
Missing from tonight's line-up was Ryan Holloway (also out of town with his travel team). With a full line-up, Allen will once again be THE team to beat as we get closer to the playoffs. Allen has what it needs to defends it's 2007 City and State Championships.
Next game is on TUESDAY Jan 22nd at 800pm in Frisco. We are playing against Highland Park. They are the guys who started Allen's four-game skid back in December. We'll be looking for another fast and physical game! Be there!

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST...
ALLEN 3 - HP 2 (Shoot-out)
HP's leading scorer, Michael Crow scored twice to get the Scots out ahead of our Eagles, find the back of the net at the very end of the first period and then at the midpoint of the game. With league-leading goalie Connor Cantrell to mind HP's net, it looked like that would be all the scoring that was needed.
Allen was playing with a short bench since a lot of their players were competing in State Playoff games with their travel teams. Coach Fry asked his veterans to dig deep and leave it all on the ice.
Patrick Capetillo responded by burying the puck behind Cantrell with only two and a half minutes to play. Still down, our Eagles pulled goalie Nick Dowhaniuk for an extra attacker, and Capetillo managed to pull off the impossible by scoring with only 45 seconds remaining in the game.
There was no scoring in OT, so Ryan Holloway made sure that our Eagles went home with the extra point by scoring the game winner during the shoot-out.
With the win, Allen finds themselves in a four-way tie for second place, and only one point behind league leading Mansfield. Tied with our Eagles are HP, Plano-West and Jesuit.
Our Eagles will not play again until Sunday, February 3rd. That's right... Super Bowl Sunday, at 745pm. So if you end up getting bored of seeing the Patriots whoop up on the Giants, and you don't want to see the New Yorkers (err... New Jersey-ites) go crying home to momma... then come on out to Farmers Branch and watch your Eagles open up a can of their own whoop-dee-doo on South Lake.
See ya at the rink!
