We're have a smell coming from an area in a back bedroom for about 2 weeks and cannot locate where it's coming from. Kind of a saurkraut odor. had the gas company come and check for leaks and there we none. Something dead in the wall? How long would it smell? Also the utility room is on this same wall, maybe a vent clogged? Don't know who to call, plumber to check lines? Thanks for any input.

Last October we had a really bad natural gas smell hanging around our house also, and it turned out that the hubby had a battery charger hooked up to a battery in the garage and it was getting hot and emitting the odor. Naturally, I too had the gas company out.

If it was a dead critter you would know that smell. It smells like death, not sauerkraut.

I fed a mouse/rat in our attic that green bait and it died in the wall in the bathroom. Other than demo'ing the wall you can't really do much. I had a pest control person come out and all they did, since they couldn't locate the rat, was give me this rat odor stuff that really only hid the smell for a couple of hours. You are suppose to put some on a cotton ball and rub it around the room(non-toxic). The smell was so bad I eventually just left the top off the bottle.
It lasted a few weeks. One way I found out was to take the covers off the switches and plugs and smell the switch/plug. If the smell is strong in one area(like in my case) you know where he is. Im for sure going to use sticky pads next time.

Do you have an attice above that room? We had a family of squirrels living in our attic. We had a guy come out and set cages out to capture them. We would check every day and never found any. Then when the furnace guy came out to check out the system, he found one dead in the cage that was just on the verge of smelling. Maybe check up there if you have an attic.
For all the animal lovers here, the cages were meant to catch them alive and return them to the outdoors somewhere other than our yard.

A water leak may be a culprit, or a dead critter possibly. The battery charger case is also possible, but one could rule that out quickly. I've run into that at one of our museums before. And often with critters, the smell will dissipate some when the critter dries out. If you don't have gas, that's ruled out for a lingering smell. Brief odor spells (smell spell?) can be attributed to natural gas sometimes, as it can "pocket" in certain features of a building.

Boy are you right about the battery thing. At the center one of our battery back up for the alarm system went bad and my gosh it smelled like large animal had died and rotted. It was the worst smell I ever had to smell! I have had an animal die in the walls and that was nothing next to the battery. Glad I could get someone out the next day!

Thanks for all the comments. But, does anyone have a recommendation maybe for a plumber, esp. since the washer/dryer share a wall with this room. I'm thinking maybe it's the washer drain line that may have some build up.
