OK, where does one find real Parmigiano Reggiano cheese in Allen? I bought some Kroger and Sam's brand faux Parmigiano Reggiano wedges. The Kroger brand was horrid when tasted alone and the Sams club tasted OK, but not like real Parmigiano Reggiano. On the upside, they were no where near the $15 a pound the real stuff costs.

There is not much of a cheese selection here in Allen.
Market Street in McKinney has a good selection of cheese.
Central Market is my favorite. They have a very large selection of imported cheeses including entire wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano.

America's Test Kitchen just did a taste test of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. The winner was an Italian cheese, Parmigiano-Reggiano Vacche Rosse, from igourmet.com, cost about $34/lb. The best supermarket cheese was by Boar's Head, but it is also an Italian cheese. Boar's Head Parmigiano-Reggiano. None of the American Parmesan cheeses did very well - too moist and tasted off.

I love ATK, watch the show and get their Cook's magazine. I've found they are rarely wrong on their recommendations. However, since I can't afford $34 a pound for cheese, I'll stick to the Parmigiano-Reggiano I found for $15\pound. I can barely afford that and only use the cheese when I'm in a gourmet mood. I treat it like I do my Saffron.
If it's cheaper, I'll have to test Boar's Head brand for everyday use.

igourmet has coupons somewhere on line. The cheese is sold in 8 oz portions. But that is the one that they had on ATK. Same company has a slightly lower priced one. Or look for the Boar's Head. Kroger carries their deli meats, so possibly their cheeses as well.

I understand your statement about using expensive saffron. A friend found a good place to get saffron cheap. You can get a nice size bag of saffron for a few dollars at the Haji Food Market located in Plano at Park Blvd and Ohio Drive (4621 W Park Blvd Ste 108).
This is much better than paying $10-$12 per jar that contains about 10-12 saffron threads in the standard grocery stores.

I get my Parmigiano Reggiano at Costco.... Much less expensive than the grocery store.

Real Parmigiano Reggiano with the name tattooed on the rind? How much?
I know the phrase "real Parmigiano Reggiano" is redundant, but many people mistakenly call any Parmesan cheese Parmigiano Reggiano.

The brand from Sam's is "Argintoni" "Authentic imported from Italy". This wedge of Parmigiano Regginao was 0.098lb $10.12...and it is labeled for 24 months .. we use it over a period of a few months. Seems all right with us. And we do love our Italino
We used to purchase bigger wedges but it seems like every thing else the are dummying down.

The only Parmesean cheese we could find at Sam's was "OK" but it didn't compare to the real stuff. I'll look again to see if I missed something.

I just checked my Sam's Parmesean and it's from Wisconsin. I'll have to keep my eye out for the other. Thanks for the tip.
