It is that time of year again when the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be out canvassing the neighborhoods on the morning of Saturday, February 16th starting at around 9:00 am knocking on doors asking for non-perishible food donations for the Allen Food Pantry. Please be generous!

Thanks for the heads up, Denise! I think it was last year that they didn't do the bags- but you (or someone else) gave a heads up so I knew to pre buy items. Without the notifying bag, I would not be prepared. I think this year I am going to focus on quality dried pastas, and quality canned tomatoes (San Marenzo) for some nice spaghetti.
Chicken and beef stock, and I always have a lot of canned Mexican salsas, beans, etc.

We used to put the bags on the doors, but either they blew away and littered the area or people just tossed them in the trash or used them as trash liners not bothering to read what was printed on the bag. We've found it is easier to take the bags to the door when asking for food donations. That way the bags don't go to waste. There may still be some scout groups that will leave the bags on the doors this weekend, so keep an eye out for them. They are yellow. Thanks for being prepared with your food donations.

Some units will be placing bags out on the 9th, but as denisew indicated, several problems are likely. I will ask some folks about apartments, but I think they'll mostly be going to houses in their assigned areas. But some of us wouldn't mind getting a bag to an interested party.

Our Cub Scout pack will be distributing bags tomorrow morning and picking up on the 16th. Our area is Angel Pkwy to Greenville, Stacy to Exchange. So if you live in Lost Creek, Silhouette, Ten Oaks, or Allen Estates, you should get a bag on your door tomorrow morning.

Something we noticed that helped prevent many bags from blowing away was to simply tie the bag to the door handle. Rubberbands attaching the bags to door handles worked pretty good too.

My issue is not so much with having the bags, but having advanced notice. The bags were the notice. If I had not read here last year about the upcoming date, I can assure you a knock on my door on that Saturday would have been met with silence. I was not there. Yet, I would love to contribute. Even if I had been home, there is a good chance I would not answer the door, since I had no way of knowing it would be scouts. Had I answered the door, I would have had to scramble to find a few good cans (after checking expy dates) while the scouts waited at the door. Not much of a donation.
As it turned out, since I read here last year about the upcoming dates, I was able to clip my coupons and shop for the scouts. I put the goods out at dawn in regular kroger plastic, and I stapled yellow cardstock on each one with the word "SCOUTS". When I returned home late afternoon, they had been picked up.
If yellow bags don't work, how about a 4 x 6 " yellow card taped to the door?
Also, I think advance notice gives children a chance to help- they can go shopping with a bit of their allowance and pick out what cans to donate. Can't do that if you don't know about it ahead of time.

We put signs up in our neighborhood to remind people A couple signs go in at the school and other signs in places in the yards of scouts where a lot of people will see them. That way people know. We also put information about scouting for food in our elementary school newsletter. Most people don't mind pulling a few things out of their pantry to put in the bags. Last year our pack had the most items collected in Allen.

I just wanted to say thanks to all the scouts who went out into the rain this morning to collect food for the Allen Food Pantry and to those who donated. The final count was over 18,000 items collected for all of Allen. That is around 4,000 more than last year. Way to go!

I had two bags sitting on my porch with a note that said "Boy Scouts" and no one picked them up.

That happens sometimes. Different Scout units have responsibility for different neighborhoods, but I'm sure denisew or one of us Scouters around here could help. Or it could be taken to the Food Pantry if you like?
One notice went out to the District, that due to weather, the times on Saturday were relaxed, but they did hope the pick ups would be done sometime then.

moose48 - It could be your neighborhood doesn't have a pack or troop close enough to cover it. If you don't mind, could you drop off your donations at the Allen Food Pantry? There is a box outside the door where you can leave the bags. The local Kroger stores also have bins for food pantry donations. That might be more convenient for you. We appreciate you setting out the food and so sorry you didn't have scouts coming by your house to pick up on Saturday.
