I am a father of two boy going to the Allen high school an they have use mums r u for the last couple of years the poduct has been great ....i mean the mums they have gotten for there girlfreinds have been out of this world i can rember when i was going to plano high an getting a mum for my girlfreind i wish i could gotten one from mum r us instead of what was getting 25 years ago (mum r us) have the best mums the price is right an they will work with the boys an girls so they can have the very best....you can go some where else but youll be disapointed,...... after seeing what MUM R US has to offer

How about mums for alumni? I know they should be small, and either short or no streamers, but what color? AISD is having a Homecoming BBQ for alumni before the game, and there's an adult party after the game. Or do alumni no longer wear mums?

My son is a senior this year and the girl he is dating is from out of state. She thinks the whole mum thing is crazy and said that she doesn't want one. I'm sooo disappointed that I don't get to make a mum this year.  My last opportunity!! I'm worried that on Homecoming day she'll feel left out when she sees how many other girls have mums. She doesn't even want to go to the dance... she just doesn't understand the whole "homecoming" thing.

One thing native Texans shouldn't take for granted is the school spirit here. It is NOT common everywhere. In fact my oldest son's girlfriend (from out of state) visited us last fall and went to an AHS football game. She was blown away by the school spirit demonstrated and said she would have loved if her school had displayed even 1/10 of that level of spirit/community.

You're right. Football is religion in Texas. I have nieces, nephews and friends in other states and they don't go all out like we do. I guess it's true... everything is bigger in Texas, even our school spirit.
I just really wanted to make one last mum for my senior (sniff, sniff). (It's all about me, right?)

As far as spirit it's more than just football in my opinion. It's bona fide school spirit all year round. Wearing school colors all year round. Attending pep rallies and kickoffs and supporting band, orchestra, theatre, robotics, academic contests, etc. It's really wonderful that having school spirit is actually "cool" here. That's not the case everywhere. And we really should not take it for granted. Of course it helps that we have a wonderful school system here in Allen to be proud of. And I love the way it's integrated from Elementary through Middle to high - everyone growing and supporting one ultimate school. I know there have been arguments for having 2 high schools here. I grew up in a city with more than 1 high school and that may have contributed to the lessening of spirit. Here as a community we pull together for one school and its a big deal to decorate "blue" or decorate for homecoming or make mums. Its one of my favorite parts of living in Allen and I'm glad we "got here as quick as we could!"

I LOVE hearing all this school spirit! I graduated from AHS many, many years ago (hey, I remember Allen's first red light!) and it's great to hear the spirit is alive and well in the 21st century. I go to the games and wear the pride, even tho I don't have children in high school anymore. And Miz K, if you really want to make a mum, you can make one for me!!

I would venture to add that it's not just Texas where football rules. I grew up in Southeastern Oklahoma, and my mother used to joke that on Friday nights when we had an away game, robbers could come into town and hit every house because EVERYONE was at the game!

In your post you said you have made mums for your son's dates. Have you ever made the garter things that the guys wear? Daughter & I are thinking about making one for boyfriend. I've never seen one. Daughter tried to explain what they look like, but I'm not getting the picture.
Can anyone tell me what they are and how they are made? Thanks!

No, I've never had occasion to make a garter. Although, I think it would extremely easy to make. It's the same as making a mum only on a smaller scale. I know the Kroger on Exchange has mums and garters in the lobby area when you first walk into the store. You could go there and have a look and buy all the supplies at Hobby Lobby. When I was in Hobby Lobby the other day I noticed that they had the garters, then you would need the cardboard backing for the mum and the mum(I would get the smaller mum - I think it's 3-4 inches) and the appropriate color ribbon and a few trinkets. The garter is worn on the arm so I think total it's only maybe a foot long. I don't believe the garter is pinned on, so you don't want to make it so heavy that it won't stay up on the arm. The Mums-R-Us poster may have more tips as I've not made a garter.
GOOD NEWS: My sons date has decided that she'll wear a mum after all. Her parents convinced her that this is her senior year and that she should participate in all the senior traditions.  Yea! I get to make a mum after all, although I've been warned not to go over the top with it. That might be as hard as not making one at all.

They have garter "arm bands" that you build the mum for the guys on. Pretty simple, ribbons are MUCH shorter than those for the girls mums. Perhaps someone can give an idea for length for the guys garter mum?

I think Garters have 18 inch ribbons. Ribbons for mums are 36 inches

I just ordered my sons' date a Homecoming mum from Cathy at Mums "R" Us and I was so pleased with the selection she has. It was almost overwhelming to choose since she had such a great selection! I would recommend ordering your mum or garter early. I am all about supporting an Allen small business, too! Her number is 972-727-3845. Go Eagles!!!

I think what probably started out as a cute thing to do for homecomming has turned into an "affair" of the Joneses. Her mum is bigger than mine, it has more stuff, it lights up, it spins, it plays "the eyes of texas", short of fireworks and shooting flames, it does it all.
How does engaging in my McMansion is bigger than your McMansion at the high school level make better people? When the made in China, fake version of a "mum" exceeds the cost of a real mum then I think one needs to examine the value and benefits of the gift - soon to be trash. It's about as dated as blue eye shadow and hairdo's needing flight clearance.
I find the tradition to be wasteful and ostentatious. A small, simple flower or corsage is more tasteful and appropriate for a prom.

OK, I just found out last night that we will need to get a mum for homecoming. In a way I got excited, because I never get to do girlie things, but the more I thought about it the more scared I got. This will be the first time my son officially taking a date to homecoming - after the excitment ran out, I started to panic about he cost. Tickets, clothes, Mum, flowers - OK my question, would it be cheaper to make the mum or order one? do we get her flowers for the dance? do they wear a suit or is dress pants, shirt and tie enough?
