Most of the time you know about where you are on "brake life" from the shop who rotates your tires every 6,000 miles, usually lasting about 28-30,000 miles on the front brakes. At or around this mileage at least check them or change them if needed. The rear brakes, though usually lasting double or more compared to the fronts, should be at least checked as often. A lot of mfg. of brake pads include warning indicators to make a shrill squeek when brake pads are getting close but I still like to visually check them at least every time you rotate your tires.

Is it just me, or do brake pads not last as long as they used to?

I agree...we've had to replace the brakes on our truck once a year; somewhere around 15k or so.

I guess I’m lucky. My truck has over 120,000 miles on it and I didn’t have to replace the front brakes until about 100,000 miles and the rear brakes are the original factory and still have lining on them.
My computer beat me at checkers, but I sure beat it at kickboxing.
