I know there are many things we need to be thankful for this Thanksgiving - families, our freedoms, good food, good schools, a great place to live, and much more. But today I was thankful for the trees. I had to drive down to Dallas to pick up a new ice maker for my refrigerator. On the way there and on the way back the thing I was noticing, other than all the other cars on the road, was the beautiful colors of the leaves on the trees.
Many of the oak trees had shades of red and orange and still some were still green on the verge of turning a warm color of autumn. Bradford Pears, although I wouldn't have one in my own yard for all their troubles of limbs breaking in the slightest breeze, were brilliant shades of red. The few sweet gums I saw were a rainbow of golds, oranges and reds. Chinese pistache trees glowed with shades of oranges and reds. The bald cypress looked beautiful with the fine textured golden rust colored leaves. Cedar elms showed tiny leaves of gold. Crape myrtles even showed off their fall colors of red, orange and gold hues.
It was a very colorful drive to get that part. I look forward to seeing more colorful leaves tomorrow when I walk off that turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, deviled eggs, fruit salad, pie, . . . I will have a feast for my eyes as well as my stomach. The turning of the leaves in autumn is truly something to warm your soul. So when you go outside tomorrow - and it should be a beautiful day for going outside - open your eyes and enjoy what God has done with His paintbrush.
