It is not a brake problem and I'm trying to figure it out. Maybe shocks or springs? When I come to a stop, I hear a squeaky boink right after the van stops. It sounds like it comes from the rear of the van. The brakes work fine - they're not soft. I'm just curious about this sound. It is a 2001 Chevy Express van.

Are you still with your foot on the brake or does it happen when you let off?

There are a number of things it could be from a sticky spring/release to a loose leaf-spring bolt or a loose muffler hanger. But maybe our good friend Bob knows of particular problems with an Express Van.

I had a Dodge van that did that. It turned out that the straps on the gas tank had loosened just enough to let the tank move a bit when the gas sloshed around in it. That’s probably something extremely rare though.

Could be your U-joints. When at a stop shift slowly from drive to reverse and back a couple of times. If you hear a pronounced clunk and get the feeling of more that the normal amount of free play in your driveshaft then have them checked out.

My foot is still on the brake when it happens. It happens a split second after the vehicle comes to a stop. And, it doesn't happen every single time, just most of the time.

I'm not feeling any extra "play" in the steering wheel when I am driving or backing up, so I don't think it is the u-joints, but could also have that looked at.

I'm hoping Bob will look at this and reply too.

The u-joints have nothing to do with steering. It could also just be noisy springs. Somewhere way back I saw something about oiling and wraping leaf springs to prevent noise.

Have you had any recent repair/replacement work in that area of the car? Any signs going through dips/bumps, that a shock could be at fault?

Definitely sounds like something that is loose and when the vehicle stops, it comes to rest. I would think most of the other suggestions on here would be more noticeable than what you describe.

The only thing we've done to the van recently is maintenance such as oil change, state inspection (don't know why they didn't point this problem out to me then, because it was making the noise then too). Yes, this has been going on for awhile. I am beginning to think it does have something to do with the shocks or springs. I'll have to wait to take it in for repair next week.

Sorry to hear about your van, Denise. I don't know anything about cars, but have learned a valuable lesson from going to oil change places and the car wash place. My husband had his oil changed awhile ago and they put in a new filter or something in. When he drove away, this black box-thing on the passenger side was really loose. He took it back immediately for them to fix.
I went to Waterfalls car wash and had my car washed. I drove away and didn't notice the problem at the time but the next day when I was driving, it felt like the transmission was going out. I tried backing up and the back end would just slide sideways. So I called AAA and had it towed to the dealership and was without a car for 2 days. Come to find out, it wasn't the transmission. So, it cost me $300.00 to be told that someone had put it in 4 wheel drive and that would be the person at the car wash who wiped down the inside of my car. So that is the first thing I check every time I get it washed.

I do know how to change the oil myself, but don't. Although I do wash my own vehicle. I haven't had any problems with my vehicle after oil changes though.

I looked up "Boink" but didnt come up with anything in the data base. :)

Sometimes the brakes will make a noiseafter stopping the vehicle and the vehicle rocks backward slightly to rest at a stop. The linings flex just a bit and hold but there is a slight movement between the rotor and the pad/shoe making a noise sometimes-some cars/trucks. Im not sure this is the noise you are hearing until I would hear it myself. This is just a suggestion as to what it might be as this is common and doesnt mean there is anything wrong with your brakes.
