I went back to Matt's a couple of weeks ago, and it still has me scratching my head. While it is good, I found myself wishing I had gone back to Los Charros instead.

We finally went last week and have been 2 times since. I love their hot sauce which in my opinion is what hot sauce should be. Could use a teensy more heat but I love the broth consistency versus the chunky!

We've been regulars at Mattito's for 14 years or so and were delighted to see this "cousin" restaurant pop up here in Allen.

Unlike Mattito's, they actually have the Bob Armstrong dip on the menu.

We had lunch there yesterday for the first time and it was excellent.

I went there last month for lunch and we went there last week for dinner and everything was great. I know they had a few issues when they first opened, but seems to have worked everything out, which most good restaurants do.

I would say they have improved! I have been eating there for the last month at least 3 days a week! Friday evening and tomorrow evening so I can get my niece and nephew hooked!!

Posting this strictly as constructive criticism:

Went last night (wed) - at about 8PM.

Only two other tables seated when we walked in. After seating us it took well over 10 minutes for anyone to even ask about water/drink order. This is with plenty of staff walking around. Finally got the margi's and ordered the Bob Armstrong queso - it was barely warm and seemed thrown together. It's hard to mess up queso - but they did it last night. Then, to hear the only two servers argue about whose responsibility it was to do such and such... yuck. Turn off.

Bad vibe there last night.

Assuming you reported this to the manager, what kind of response did you get?

I haven't eaten there yet but have given it some thought to do so...

Just missed you last night. We were there between 6:30-7:15. We've made Matt's at least a once a week choice. We were seated promptly and within 3 minutes we had our chips/salsa and our server was bringing our drinks. Our order was brought out in a timely manner, our drinks re-filled and our server adequately attentive to our needs.
Sorry you had a less than pleasant experience.

cp, you make a very good point. I did not seek out the manager and make them aware. I should have and regret not doing that now that you mention it.

Thanks, Richard. It would take a lot more to drive me away for good. They have been great in the past and I absolutely do consider last night an exception rather than the norm. I certainly don't complain just to complain and had it been just one or two things last night I would not have posted. My hope was that this might be seen as contructive criticism.

We will most definitely be returning.

Gotcha.

I'm certainly not above the experiences at some restaurants where I left with a less-than-desirable taste, no pun intended. One place, Abuelo's in Plano, got my business twice. I won't be returning since I can't justify the price for the taste since there are so many other options nearby. The Abuelo's in Abilene back in the late 90s was excellent, and I assumed the Plano location was a sister operation. So I tried it. I'll pass on it unless something has changed there in the last 2 years.

Some folks only allow one mistake before they write off whoever and whatever it is that disappointed them. Normally, I try to go back a few more times, whether ordering the same thing or otherwise, and seeing if anything has improved.

I'm glad you'll consider going back, and I hope to make it there myself. Two things I use to determine if a Tex-Mex or Mexican restaurant (or any restaurant otherwise) will be good and worthy of repeat business is sweet tea, and/or chips and salsa.

Sorry to continue off topic about Abuelos.
Used to go there frequently after Mario's closed down. Still like it but a couple years ago began to think the quality of their meats had declined. Last visit was by my wife and she also ordered a buritto dish to bring home to me. It was just fine but it's the first burrito I've seen that was rolled, stuffed, and baked with a sauce side by side with other "burittos". The server insisted it was a buritto when my wife questioned it but I was thinking it was an enchilada when I saw and ate it.

Is anyone familiar with the Matt's Famous El Rancho in Austin? How does this measure up?

I went to the original Matt's when I lived in Austin and I loved it! The food at the Matt's here is good also. I usually get the " Original Red Enchiladas" and they are always tasty. The only thing I really don't care for is the fact that they do not bring out fajitas on a sizzling skillet. Instead they just bring them out on a plate. I like the sizzle. So I just order the Tacos Al Carbon.

You need to look around and discover more what good tex-mex is. It's not Matt's. Try Chuy's

Matt's has a great burger and fries. Well when they cook the meat. Twice i've sent it back because the middle was sticky raw. But it sure is good when it is cooked. So are the fries. Chuy's has me spoiled for TexMex but I come with friends because they like the food.

Being lovers of mexican food, we gave Chuy's 3 tries. We agreed it's just one notch above Taco Bueno. Everything on the plate, enchiladas, tamales, etc. all tasted the same. Still rate 1.Tupinambas 2. El Fenix, everybody else a distant 3rd. Matt's is still our local choice.

I sure hope we don't forget some of the other really good local places like El Grande Burrito and Chito's. I agree there are some other local places that make Taco Bueno look great.
