Does anyone have a recommendation for a paper shredding company that accepts a one time load? Due to family issues, I had to miss the Great American Cleanup last Saturday. I'm downsizing and cleaning out all those old papers from the attic.

Shred-it came out to the hospital a few weeks back for a free shred event. You might check their link for the nearest shredding event coming up...

Or, you might try Iron Mountain. But, since they are in Dallas (near Love Field), you'd have to drive a little further to get what you need if Shred-it doesn't have anything nearby soon...

So do they come out with the shredders in the truck or do they just collect your boxes of paper?
Yes I am paranoid, but I am always afraid that if I don't personally see my paper being destroyed right in front of me, later they will appear at a dumpster somewhere in the metroplex.

Put all of the material in a bucket. Mix some water and laundry bleach and pour into the bucket. Let set overnight and all of the printing is gone. Put in a trash bag and throw away.

The truck they drove had the shredder on the back. And let me tell you, it was a shredder! They dumped a whole trashbag-full (which was actually put in a box at their request) into the shredder and the sound didn't change. No dragging or slowing down of the motor. I stood and watched without issue.
I'm the same way about watching what's being shredded. Also, there was a mirror above the shredder which allowed us to see down into the shredder, I'm assuming, just to make sure we could clearly see the operator not taking anything...

Thanks cp. That's what I wanted to know. Even though we are consistently shredding unwanted junk mail every time we receive it, the old bills we kept add up.
This beats setting a fire in my charcoal grill! (I thought about doing that recently.)

If you don't have a whole lot of stuff, you can take it to Best 4 Less next to the old Albertson's store at McDermott and 75. They will weigh it and charge you for it but it doesn't cos that much. Free is always better though.

Here's a link regarding Iron Mountain's shredding. I wasn't aware that they partner with OfficeDepot and Staples to provide document shredding services there. As for cost, I don't see any mention of it, which may need to be verified.

Staples is .79 a lb and Office Depot is .99 lb.
I weighed one box without the lid and it was 16 lbs so that would be 12.64 @ Staples and 15.84 at Office Depot.
DFW Shredding has on-site shredding on Saturdays @ $10 first box and $5 each additional box. They are located at 800 Fulgham Road Plano, TX 75093 (Behind CARMAX of Plano, which is between Preston and Coit on Plano Parkway).
Thanks for all the responses. I want to try the water and bleach solution some time when I don't have so much. I can't believe I had papers back to the seventies!.

I have used DFW Shredding previously, it was a quick and easy process. They have you put your papers in a trashcan that is lifted and dumped into the truck. Then you watch on the monitor as everything is being shred.

I worked for a small business and we used Cut 2 Shreds for our annual shedding. They do it onsite. You can get a quote emailed to you. This may be a good choice if you have a few boxes of things to shred.

An update: I took 5 boxes to DFW Shredding in Plano (behind Carmax). It's in a storage place and they are around the back. You pull up, they take each box and dump it in their bin (yes! got to keep the boxes) and then you watch while they move it to the shredder truck. Then up it goes and is shredded. The best part? You can watch it - the view is from the inside of the truck so you can see the bin attach, see the bin raise and dump, then watch as it is being shredded. 5 boxes took maybe 2-3 minutes. It was $30 well spent to get rid of stuff from the 70's, 80's and 90's - financial type stuff. Now my attic is empty and I have 5 extra boxes to pack other stuff in.
