Our 5th grade team is LEAVING ASA because of the current commissioner. If ASA wonders why the retention is so low for the older grades, they should look at the top. The younger grades are still coming in because they are unaware of all the injustices going on.
We all chuckle when we get the emails from the Commish about having a good sportsmanship and "this is about the kids". That is hilarious.
When you handle conflict by making attacks towards a team about their players, that leaves little room for sportsmanship. Yes, our team did receive emails from the commish saying that our team was weak and he challenged us to a scrimmage. Sportsmanship? None.
So we are THRILLED to be leaving ASA....and yes, I have volunteered and served so don't tell me I don't know what it takes to be on the board. Been there, no need to go back when no one is listened to if they disagree with the boss.
Too bad for ASA all these teams are leaving when they are needing to raise money for their new indoor playing fields. The commish is taking money away from ASA and I'm not sure they understand that. Truth hurts.

You were going to leave during LAX and then you were going to leave the Tigers and didn’t and now you are going to leave because the team got disbanded and a lot of those players are already on new teams. Guess you didn’t get a call? I am pretty sure alot of people sit around and laugh at emails you send in. I think it will be better with no XXXX around so don’t just say it make sure you do it.

Over the past 13 plus years I have coached almost every sport and sat on multiple sports at ASA. I have seen many many changes in football, softball, baseball, Track etc... some for the good some I didn't like so much.
One thing I have realized is...Once you get to Jr high ball and High School ball those kids of the mega teams start falling out. Those teams that won the 6th grade division due to what most of us deem as recruiting...kids disappeared or were beating out of thier positions once in Jr High.
I say that to say...focus on training your kids giving them the tools to be successful....give 100% and try your best to win....if you lose to a mega team...fine your kids will past them when it counts.....High School Varisty...
No one remembers who won the 6th grade city championship......

Tamm...agree with you 1000%, the problem is that before you get to the school, you should be able to learn and have a good experience getting there. When your leader does in fact change the rules to benefit himself, it does get old to see that he will have a stacked team. It's no fun to lose year after year for the kids, the losing will burn them out also. I guarantee that his 1st year team in 5th grade will be more competative than teams that have been together for a few years. And it will be because of the talent, not the coaching.
The commish sent out an email about 3 years ago about the evils of Select football, that Matthew Brown never played select football (not true) if you play in select you can't play in Allen period. he then strikes a deal with a select league and touts the benefits of Select football. Well which is it? good or bad, bad a few years ago because of the threat of kids and teams leaving, good now because it's a recruiting tool for him for his team. How do i know? He personally recruited my son for his 5th grade team for this upcoming season. He also told coaches this year, you can scrimmage any team you want from any league in the metroplex except for teams from only 1 league, and mentioned the league by name. Why just one league? well because he is upset with a league that was formed my a former board member and a league that a couple of ASA teams left to join. It's not the leagues fault they left, it's because they 1) were looking for other/better competition 2) the current commish or both. PSA has a rule about only scrimmaging teams from Plano, it doesn't single out just one league so thats a fair rule. Trust me, it would not benenfit a team from PYFL to scrimmage an ASA team, BUT it would benefit an ASA team greatly.
I have had kids when Troy was commish and now with the other and Troy wasn't perfect, he did lots of things that didn't make sense and changed lots of rules but he never made changes that were to his benefit only. that's the diffence between the 2. My suggestion to keep the emails going to Ken if your unhappy, or do what lots of other parents have done and look outside of ASA, not as convenient but there are about 3 or 4 select teams that play in other leagues that are mainly Allen kids and it's worth the effort.

Take a kid that is great at a competitive game of tag and I can turn them into a football player if they have the heart for football.
I don't care what team they played for in the lower ranks - athletic ability, size and heart are the only thing that matters and heart maybe the most important.
Everything else is parents living a fantasy.

Read the article last month - I haven't read a more slanted article ever. It makes the parents of the kids look bad and gives a black eye to Allen. I thought the whole article was embarrassing. Although, I did like the comments made by Coach Westerberg - I feel for him and the fact that he has to deal with these types of parents.

I thought the article was fine. Been a fan of the Hawks for years, and it's good to see those kids get the recognition they deserve. As to what football is here in Big A, it is what it is.

If you have a library card for the Allen library then you can access this Texas Monthly article online.
1) Allen Public Library web
2) "Adults" tab on left
3) "Research and Online Resources"
4) "Discovery Texas" option
5) Ebsco Academic Search Complete database
6) search for:
Publication = Texas Monthly
Published Dates = 2013
the results will be Texas Monthly articles from this year and then just look for the one titled "Friday night"

Yes, much easier. An earlier writer stated that the article wasn't available on the TM web without a subscription. TM must make the articles available after a delay.
