If you think the south has the corner on racism, you've obviously not been up north. It's just more subtle, but just as strong.

LostYankee, I believe you are correct, racism is still prevalent in our country. The difference between the North and South is crimes like this can be more easily swept under the rug in the South. There's a huge difference between having racist thoughts and acting out on those thoughts. Historically, the acting out part has been much more a part of Southern way of life. I have made this point too many times to count, but in this country, our Black brothers and sisters have been free, whole people for not even a whole generation. Making the transition from property to whole, free human is going to take more than just a couple generations for both the Blacks and the ignorant people who grew up to hate them. There is still assimilation while attempting to retain the unique African heritage that people are fighting so hard with. As long as Black men and women are suspect simply due to the color of their skin, we're going to have idiots like this shooter and stupid laws that supposedly protect whites from the suspected criminals.

I lived in a very large city up north where if you were coming from "that part of town" you could NOT make a left hand turn into the wealthy, uber-white suburbs. Also, the rapid transit system went through the high end areas but only made one stop, in the center of that burg, so the "help" could be let off to go to work.
It's funny, my kids watched "The Help" and were awestruck at the level of racism that existed. No, we're not there yet, but with each generation we're making exponential growth in the right direction.

If you know any African Americans ask them about "the talk." The talk mothers and fathers have with their sons.
Because while things are moving in a positive direction, it is still very dangerous to be black and male in this country.
You seem to miss the point that the entire police department did nothing. There are several mothers who have come forward in that same town complaining that their son's murders never got any attention either.
Talking about how good things are compared to 1950 or even 1980, will not bring Trayvon Martin back nor will it stop this same thing from happening again next week, by the same guy with the same police department turning its head.
You cannot understand how it feels to be looked at like a criminal everywhere you go, regardless of your education, or of your financial status, neither do I. But I'll bet you can imagine it would make it hard to be positive about the future. This is where the discussion should be, not what it was like, but what its still like.

The DA is still saying this shooter could still go uncharged. Only in a world where AlEC and the NRA can write insanely broad legislation for TeaPublicans to rubber stamp could a man attack an innocent kid who then manages to protect himself well enough for the attacker to shoot claiming self defense and still remain within the law.

They are already trying to duck this topic, saying that this incident isn't protected by the Stand Your Ground Law, when in reality it probably is.

If things related to race were left to local communities in the South, your family would still have a live-in servant you didn't have to pay. I think this kind of thing needs light and plenty of discussion. Just because you don't personally feel the pressure of race in your day to day life doesn't mean it does not exist or is not legitimate.

Its ironic the man doing the pursuing is said to be standing his ground, but the man being pursued is not allowed to stand his ground, how does that work?
Also Zimmerman was not on neighborhood watch, he was returning from the grocery store.

Zimmerman claims that is him you hear crying for help:
Meanwhile, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Zimmerman told police he lost Martin in the neighbourhood he regularly patrolled and was walking back to his vehicle when the youth approached him from behind. The two exchanged words, Zimmerman said, and Martin then punched him in the nose, jumped on top of him and began banging his head on a sidewalk. Zimmerman said he began crying for help; Martin's family thinks it was their son who was crying out. Witness accounts differ and 911 tapes in which the voices are heard are not clear.
The Sanford police statement said the newspaper story was "consistent" with evidence turned over to prosecutors.

Two direct witnesses - one is dead...throw in all kinds of conflicting, limited evidence, stories, etc...and a narrative can be made for all kinds of perspectives on this...Man...It's going to be a whirlwind until this goes to grand jury, and possibly to trial. Personally I hope, whether Zimmerman is guilty or not, that justice and common sense prevails.
Zimmerman - should have left everything alone, and simply waited for police response...Martin, if witness statements are true, should have never pursued Zimmerman after he returned to his vehicle. (This portion of the testimony/police report, I believe is Zimmerman's or another other eye witnesses). An innocent man is dead. Both young men have previous histories...which could have affected mindset of both...

Cary, It was reported that Travon's dad has said that it was not Travon's voice asking for help. That's why I'm interested in seeing the "eye witness" transcripts. It is also being reported that "eye witnesses" back up Zimmerman's story that he was defending himself.
It is all getting a bit murky. I hope they just release all the details so these reports can be substantiated or refuted.
